Pitfalls and Snake Oil Salesmen

Written by:

In this video I go over some common pitfalls I see students falling in to and some of the claims that snake oil salesmen make when it comes to learning / breaking into technology. “You can do this”. This is only partially true but understand this, in order to complete this journey, you will need help from other so this should be modified to “we can do this”. You will need mentos, peers and even your friends and significant other in your corner if you are going to succeed at becoming an entry-level cloud engineer or software engineer. So start thinking in terms of “WE can do this” and not “I can do this”. You will need help so tell the people in your life that are important to you and those that will encourage you.

“This will be quick and easy” is a false thought and sometimes a claim made by snake oil salesmen. The truth is that this process is going to long and difficult for most. I want to ensure that I don’t lie to you so be prepared. This does not change the fact that for some people, this comes very easy. Some people are naturally talented and for them, this comes easy. I am not one of those people if you are not, its ok. Just know the process of becoming a cloud engineer is simple but not easy, those are two different things.

“Learn everything”. This is a claim sometimes made by snake oil salesmen and the truth is that no one can teach you everything. In this course, you will learn enough so you can be employed so I want to make sure I make the expectation clear in your. You are going to learn enough to be employed. Employment is the litmus test.

“Learn the secrets”. The trust is that there are no secrets to becoming a cloud or software engineer. As long as you are willing to do the work that other cloud engineers and software engineer do, you can become one of them. This course contains information in a structured manner to help you navigate but know this, there are no secrets I am revealing to you. All of this is well known.

“Allure of technology”. By allure of technology I mean some people are attached to technology because of how “cool” it is. It is true that technology is amazing and is wonderful but very few of get to work in the really fun parts of tech. Most of the tech jobs out there are not as fun or as much on the cutting edge. If you are attracted by the allure of technology, let me cure you of that misconception. Your job is likely to be somewhat boring. It will be fun at time, it will be difficult but the rewards will be worth it. Just don’t expect to travel to Mars any time soon. Develop some patience and don’t expect to immediately work on the fun stuff, you will likely have to pay your dues first. “Learn in your free”. This is simply untrue. the fact is that none of us have free time. if this is important to you, you will have to make time for it.

“Get hired immediately”. This is a claim that some snake oil salesmen that give you the expectation that they have some kind magic pill that you can take and get hire immediately. the problem with this sense of immediacy is that when the going gets tough, your negative self talk will start to kick and you start thinking that this is somehow not for you. The truth is that you just have to remain patient and work the process and will bear fruit.

“Financial Freedom”. This claim is true to a certain expect but this does not present the full picture. Technology is changing the world around us but if money is the reason you are getting into this then this is a mistake. When you are starting out, you will have to work at times without financial reward. you will have to work on projects and you will not be getting paid. Your negative self talk might start kicking and you might start telling yourself “I am not making any money doing this. What is the point?” You just have to stay patient. the money will come and it always comes but in the start, you will struggle a little so remain persistent.
